Federal financial aid awarding and distribution has been an ongoing problem in the US. Both local and international students utilize financial aid in order to supplement their tuition and fees which can be extremely high. However, many colleges and universities and especially large for-profit colleges and universities view federal financial aid as a revenue stream rather than as a means to improve the lives of students. Recently, the federal government announced that many college and universities make it a practice to award financial aid to students regardless of whether the students were expected to graduate, be able to find jobs or even successfully complete their initial coursework. This type of practice undermines the purpose of higher education in general and works to ruin the lives of many college or university students who otherwise might be able to finish their studies if they are redirected to developmental classes or coursework before embarking on their programs of study.
